Early Life
Theodore Capitani von Kurnatowski, known as Theo Von, was born on March 19, 1980, in Covington, Louisiana. He is the offspring of Roland Theodor Achilles von Kurnatowski (who died in 1996) and Gina Capitani and has two younger sisters and an older brother. In a 2018 interview with “The Press-Enterprise,” Theo reflected on his upbringing, stating, “Humor is a free currency not everyone can have. Growing up poor, it was the one thing I could control. I couldn’t control money, but I could control if I was funny.” After completing Mandeville High School, Von pursued studies at Louisiana State University, Loyola University New Orleans, College of Charleston, University of Arizona, and Santa Monica College before ultimately graduating from the University of New Orleans in 2011.
Career
Theo began his journey in stand-up comedy in Louisiana, and at the age of 23, he relocated to Los Angeles to take his comedy career to the next level. He made an appearance in the NBC reality competition, “Last Comic Standing,” in 2003, where he earned the title of Last Comic Downloaded through an online contest. Von participated in several international USO tours, even performing at Guantanamo Bay. His stand-up routines have been featured on shows like “Live at Gotham” (2008), “Man Up, Stand-Up” (2010), and “Kamikaze Comedy” (2015), and in 2012, he was given his own episode of Comedy Central’s “The Half Hour.” In 2009, Theo started a “crank texting” blog to share his text exchanges with strangers, which was subsequently picked up by CollegeHumor the following year and transformed into a column. He debuted his hour-long comedy special, “No Offense,” on Netflix in 2016, and followed it with “Regular People” in 2021. Additionally, he launched the 2017 comedy album “30lb Bag of Hamster Bones,” which soared to #1 on the iTunes Comedy Album charts and #4 on the “Billboard” Comedy Albums chart. A frequent guest on “The Joe Rogan Experience,” he has also been hosting the podcast “This Past Weekend” since 2016.
In 2000, Theo became a cast member of MTV’s reality series “Road Rules: Maximum
In the “Velocity Tour,” Theo Von then made appearances on several reality shows, including “Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Battle of the Seasons” (2002), “Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet” (2003–2004), “Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Battle of the Sexes 2” (2004–2005), and “Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Fresh Meat” (2006), where he achieved victories in “The Gauntlet” and “Battle of the Sexes 2.” In 2005, he took part in Bravo’s “Battle of the Network Reality Stars,” and in 2008, he triumphed over comedians like Amy Schumer, Tiffany Haddish, Bert Kreischer, Donnell Rawlings, and Kyle Cease to win Comedy Central’s “Reality Bites Back.” Von served as a panelist on ABC Family’s reality series “America’s Prom Queen” in 2008, and from 2012 to 2014, he hosted “Primetime in No Time.” In 2013, he made a guest appearance on Comedy Central’s “Inside Amy Schumer,” featured in the film “InAPPropriate Comedy,” and began hosting the TBS game show “Deal with It.” Theo guest-starred on “Why? with Hannibal Buress” in 2015, and in 2018, Comedy Central launched his three-episode show “Man Up,” where he humorously analyzes his comedian friends and confronts them with uncomfortable truths. In 2019, he appeared on YouTube’s “Hot Ones,” a show where celebrities discuss topics while eating spicy chicken wings. That same year, Von was cast in Chris Pratt’s science-fiction film “The Tomorrow War,” but ultimately withdrew due to scheduling conflicts.
Personal Life
Once romantically involved with reality star Brandi Glanville, Theo Von has since maintained a private personal life.
He shared that the decision to get sober came after he arrived at a radio interview, unable to speak due to a night spent using cocaine. Reflecting on that moment, he remarked, “The main gift that God had given me was my voice. And I couldn’t even use it because I’ve been up all night just using drugs to feel good somehow, or using drugs to feel anything.”
Darryl Strawberry, a former MLB player who was also a guest on the show, had been sober for 13 years at that time. This motivated Von to recognize that a change was necessary in his life, prompting him to attend AA meetings. He expressed:
“I sat down and listened to people tell stories – which were my favorite thing to hear. My whole life I’ve been loving stories, man. I love your story. You know, whatever your story is I love it man because all my life when I was young I just wanted a different story.“
Real Estate
In March 2021, Von acquired a 4,918 square foot home in Nashville, Tennessee, for $1.645 million. He purchased it from Derek Mason, the former head coach of Vanderbilt, who had bought the property for $1.095 million in 2014. Additionally, he owns an apartment in Los Angeles, California.
